Phasefocus Lens profiler meets the need for improved definition of contact lens specifications

Users of the Phasefocus Lens Profiler have highlighted how a lack of industry data can make it difficult to understand the clinical performance characteristics of soft contact lenses.

With respect to the refractive characteristics of simultaneous-image (multi-focal) lenses a paper published in Optometry and Vision Science states, “Commercial secrecy makes it unusual for the power profile to be described in detail, making it difficult to properly assess the likely merits and disadvantages of any particular product.” The authors, from the Universities of Manchester and Crete and the Queensland University of Technology, note that measurements made using the Phasefocus Lens Profiler “illustrate the diversity of power profiles found among current simultaneous image corrections and the difficulties in summarising their performance”; and that “refractive power profiles can be valuable guides to the visual performance that the patient might achieve with different designs of lens.” For further information, see:

With respect to the thickness profiles of toric contact lenses, the level of oxygen delivered to the cornea can be well below that expected from manufacturers’ data. Tony Hough of CLS Software told the Global Specialty Lens Symposium on January 25 2014 in Las Vegas that “oxygen delivered for a clinically realistic range of powers typically is about 50% of the published value.” For further information, see:
